Welsh Beef: PGI Status, Best Cuts and Where to Buy It Online

Sep 1, 2026

Slow-grown on the river pastures of the Usk Valley, Welsh Beef has a depth of flavour that's hard to fake, and it isn't just marketing talk. Welsh Beef carries Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, the same EU-recognised badge held by Champagne and Parma ham, so every joint labelled Welsh Beef has genuinely been born, reared and finished in Wales.

PGI status means more than a name on a label. It guarantees full traceability back to the farm, sets minimum standards for how the cattle are reared, and protects the grass-fed, pasture-based system that gives Welsh Beef its natural marbling and rich, mineral flavour. Cattle raised slowly on Welsh grass simply taste different to fast-grown, grain-finished beef, and once you've tried a properly dry-aged Welsh joint, it's difficult to go back.

Meet the butcher behind it

We source our Welsh Beef from Douglas Willis Butchers, third-generation farmers and butchers based in the Usk Valley since the 1930s. They rear their own cattle and hand-butcher everything on site, a pasture-to-plate approach that recently won them Best Butcher (Wales) at the 2026 Countryside Alliance Awards. It's the same beef supplied to Michelin-recognised kitchens, now available with next-day delivery to your door.

Which Welsh Beef cut should you buy?

For a Sunday centrepiece, the Welsh Dry Aged Beef Rib delivers a golden crust and unbeatable depth of flavour, while the Welsh Beef Sirloin Joint is prized for its marbling. Cooking for a crowd on a budget? The Welsh Beef Rump Joint roasts beautifully and costs less per portion. For the barbecue, try the lean, quick-cooking Welsh Beef Bavette Steak, and for busy weeknights, Welsh Beef Steak Mince is a versatile, freezer-friendly staple.

Whichever cut you choose, let the beef come to room temperature before cooking, sear it hard to lock in flavour, and always rest a joint for at least fifteen minutes before carving. It's a small step that makes a genuine difference to tenderness.

Every Welsh Beef joint we sell can be traced back to the farm it came from, which is exactly how provenance should work. Browse our full grass-fed British beef range to find your next roast, steak or stew.
